Instructions for use: To perform the test, place a drop of the liquid sample onto a small strip of paper or dip a piece of litmus paper into a small (liquid) sample of the sample. Ideally, do not immerse litmus paper in an entire container of chemicals—the dye could contaminate a potentially valuable sample. After a few seconds, the paper should change color. Compare the color of the test strip to the scale included in the box to determine the pH of the sample. Remember that acids and bases only refer to aqueous (water-based) solutions, so pH paper will not change color in non-aqueous liquids such as vegetable oil. Litmus paper can be moistened with distilled water to cause a color change in a gaseous sample. Gases will change the color of the entire litmus strip because the entire surface is exposed. Neutral gases such as oxygen and nitrogen will not change the color of the pH paper.
